Le Ballon Rouge

Took Sadie to see the film The Red Balloon yesterday. I'd never seen this film before and enjoyed the feeling it gave me of childhood dreams and friendships. I loved the bit at the end of the film where the little boy Pascal, who has caught and befriended a red balloon, is taken off to a better, happier place by a giant bunch of multi-coloured balloons that have floated to him from all over Paris. Today on our way home a red balloon was bobbing about in the road, floating gently towards us. Sadie and I caught it and have brought it home. Ok so it has the words 'Republic VIP' written on it in silver and it is a normal sized balloon,as opposed to the MASSIVE one in the film, but it is still a very odd coincidence don'tcha think?

A great coincidence indeed.

I've never seen Le Ballon Rouge, but what I did see last year was Le Voyage De Ballon Rouge which was inspired by it and I thought it was fantastic. I guess I should track down the original now.

As a companion piece can I direct you to 'Plastic Palace People' by Scott Walker (from 'Scott 2'), coincidentally my all time favourite song... Walker wrote this song in direct reference to 'Le Ballon Rouge' and tried to imbue it with the same childlike wonder, innocence and feeling of magic in the everyday. I think he nailed it!

Hurray! I feel ashamed that I haven't read your blog yet- I think when you first started reading mine you weren't doing one so I never went to check again. It's ace and I am reading it at work which is very naughty. I should be flapping about with pieces of paper at present trying to look busy like some sort of jobsworthy newsreader (except no one cares as I am only a PA....)I will do this tagging thing later whatever it all means. Argh cyber world of wonder! x
